Ich kann nicht abstrakt - self-portraits by female painters - June 9th to August 15th

From the extensive collection of self-portraits by the Hamburg writer and publicist Peter Engel, Schloss Reinbek shows the feminine side, artists from all over Germany. The paintings, drawings and graphics date from 1920 to the present and span some of the most important positions from this period.

The Hamburg art scene is represented with works by the old master Gretchen Wohlwill and with important painters such as Charlotte Hilmer, Gisela Bührmann, Margrit von Spreckelsen and Meike Lipp. The Eutin painter Louise Wagner from Northern Germany should also be mentioned. Gisela Breitling, Corinna Rosteck, Cornelia Schleime, who has also emerged as a writer, and Angelika von Schwedes are among the Berlin representatives.

Artists from the former GDR are particularly well represented, including the Dresden secessionist Hildegard Marion Böhme and the sculptor Sabina Grzimek, for example the painters Gudrun Brüne, Angela Hampel and Sibylle Leifer. Works by the younger generation can also be seen, including Nicole Kegel, Susanne Theumer and the shooting star Lydia Thomas.

Other outstanding positions mark self-portraits by the Heidelberg draftswoman Hanna Nagel, the sculptor Emy Röder, the photo artist Annegret Soltau from Darmstadt or Elvira Bach, who was close to the "new wild ones".

Self-exploration, self-portrayal, self-invention, artistic experiment - what is now a mass phenomenon as “selfie” has always preoccupied artists

Instead of a vernissage, a small film can be seen in the exhibition and here with a conversation between Thomas Sello, former museum educator at the Hamburger Kunsthalle, and the collector Peter Engel.
